The Story Behind Mind Science

I didn’t set out to build a business. I set out to understand why good people - even highly trained experts - sometimes make poor decisions under pressure.

That question first gripped me as a researcher at Cranfield University, where I began my career working in passenger safety for the rail and aviation sectors. I explored how people think, act, and make decisions in complex environments - from pilot human factors to regulatory oversight.
Later, I moved into military-focused research, while continuing to work in leadership and learning across government, industry, and defence.

What fascinated me wasn’t just the technical challenges these domains faced - it was the human complexity. How stress, uncertainty, and time pressure quietly shaped the way people thought, decided, and performed.

That insight shaped a twenty-year journey through applied psychology -one that would eventually lead to founding Mind Science.

The Problem I Kept Seeing

Across every environment I worked in, the pattern was the same:
Teams were technically prepared, but cognitively underprepared.

They had the skills, the knowledge, the experience - but under pressure, those assets didn’t always translate into performance. And no one was teaching that part.

I led research that informed training doctrine for the armed forces, evaluated how teams learned in live exercises, and later brought those lessons into military education - helping leaders strengthen their readiness for real-world operations. Over time, I saw that the missing link wasn’t more information. It was cognitive readiness: the ability to think clearly, adapt quickly, and act decisively under stress.

That’s why I created Mind Science.

My work sits at the intersection of psychology, performance, and resilience -
with a focus on environments where failure isn’t an option.

Why This Work Matters

I’ve seen first-hand how pressure reveals capability - and how the right mindset can change the course of an event. Helping people build that mindset is what keeps me doing this work.

What Mind Science Does

Mind Science helps people perform at their best when the pressure is on.

Everything we design - from our CR-IQ programmes to applied research - is grounded in the same belief:
'Human performance is a strategic capability.'

Our work is evidence-based, psychologically precise, and deliberately practical. It draws on behavioural science, cognitive readiness research, and over two decades supporting Defence, Cybersecurity, and other high-reliability sectors. The goal: to make the science usable in the moments that matter most.
